Glenridding Common is of huge importance to the local community, including as it does many iconic fells, including Helvellyn itself. These provide a huge draw for visitors from around the world, and who in turn are the main source of income for the community. In addition grazing rights exist on the Common for the Lightfoot and Iredale families.
In November 2017 the LDNP leased the common to the John Muir Trust (2017) for a period of 3 years. On the 1st July 2020 the LDNP began a consultation to give the JMT the option to buy the Common as part of its new lease agreement due in October 2020.
Following on from the Parish Council Meeting held on 13th July 2020, and subsequent discussions with the Chief Executive of the JMT (David Balharry) it was agreed that Patterdale Parish Council, on behalf of the community, would make a formal bid for the ownership of Glenridding Common. This was formally communicated to the LDNP at the end of July 2020, with a request to meet with the LDNP and the JMT to discuss the proposal as soon as possible. The formal response from the council is shown below.
